Sparta in action: How Sparta called the Sept/Oct ICE GO spread narrowing before it broke lower
How Sparta flagged the Sept/Oct ICE GO narrowing early
In mid-August, Sept/Oct ICE GO was still trading near recent highs.
The spread was at $55/mt.
Sparta flagged a short term ceiling forming on European diesel pricing.
Six days later, the spread had dropped $11.50/mt.
This is what we saw, when we saw it, and how Sparta users were positioned before the move.

Setting the stage on 18 August: spread firm, but arb economics already shifting
Sept/Oct ICE GO: $55/mt
The structure looked firm.
Underneath, European diesel strength was quietly closing off the setup that had been supporting it.
What Sparta saw
1. European diesel pricing escalated, pulling US barrels across the Atlantic
Sparta’s By Destination (Diesel) view showed NWE and Mediterranean sales prices climbing through August.
That escalation kept USGC ULSD MR arbs to Europe open for much of the month, and unusually, the USAC route too.
Loadings on that route ticked up in step.
As Sparta wrote:
“USGC ULSD MR arbs, and unusually USAC ULSD MR arbs, to Europe have been open for much of August. We have seen the matching uptick in loadings on this route so far this month.”
2. The stronger European bid widened the September GO e/w
That transatlantic pull showed up directly in the spread structure.
Sparta’s By Origin (Diesel) view showed WCI ULSD LR2 arbs pointing West over East for much of August, alongside the wider GO e/w.
As Sparta wrote:
“The strength in European diesel pricing has widened the September GO e/w over the same period. This in turn has pointed WCI ULSD LR2 arbs West over East also for much of August.”
3. A ceiling forming before the spread reacted
With US barrels flowing into Europe and LR2s pulled West rather than East, the setup behind further gains in European diesel pricing was closing off before Sept/Oct ICE GO caught up.
Arb windows were open. Flows were responding. The ceiling was building.
What happened next: the spread broke lower
By 24 August:
Sept/Oct ICE GO: $55/mt → $43.50/mt
The spread moved $11.50/mt lower in six days.
The result: arb flows led the price
Call made: 18 August at $55/mt
By 24 August: $43.50/mt
When arb windows open and flows respond, spreads follow. Sparta Knowledge sent the signal before the screen caught up.
