What is Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline and why is it rocking oil markets?
“A short duration will have less impact on the markets.”— June Goh, Senior Oil Analyst at Sparta Commodities

In an analysis for The Wall Street Journal, Sparta’s Senior Oil Analyst, June Goh, weighs in on the fallout from the drone-triggered shutdown of Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline, which normally carries roughly 4 million barrels a day — about 4% of global oil supply — around the Strait of Hormuz. Goh notes that a short outage would have limited market impact, but flags that the uncertainty itself is the bigger threat: European and Asian refineries dependent on Saudi crude may start cutting runs pre-emptively rather than wait to see how quickly flows are restored. With Yanbu’s export storage cushion estimated at only a few days, traders should watch for signs of refinery run cuts and any replacement-crude buying from Oman or the U.A.E. as early indicators of how the disruption is spreading through the barrel.
