War brings winter of discontent for the world’s workhorse fuel

In a recent analysis for Bloomberg, Sparta’s Senior Oil Market Analyst, June Goh, flagged that Asia will not plug Europe’s diesel gap this winter, with refiners there covering their own regional demand and likely favouring kerosene for Japanese heating over export diesel.
The backdrop is already tight, with ICE Futures Europe diesel up almost 40% from its 18 June low against a 5% gain in Brent, and European inventories down around 30% since the end of March. Goh points to the structural cause, that refining capacity lost in the Middle East was never recovered and Russian capacity has since been taken out as well.
Traders should watch Chinese diesel export volumes, Asian kerosene yields and East to West arb economics, because Goh frames Europe’s squeeze as a problem building down the line rather than an immediate crisis.
