Risk premium builds as disruption broadens beyond Hormuz

Risk premium builds as disruption broadens beyond Hormuz.

  • Geopolitical risk broadening beyond Hormuz has taken Brent from around $97/bbl at Monday’s close to near $110/bbl today. Houthi control of Yemen’s Mocha port has raised concerns around Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb traffic, while attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure add another potential pressure point. The market is increasingly pricing simultaneous risk across both major Middle Eastern shipping corridors.
  • Recent attacks on tankers raise a key question: whether normal commercial shipping through Hormuz can continue under sustained military pressure. If traffic remains depressed, $110/bbl may not prove a firm ceiling for Brent.
  • Saudi Arabia’s bypass capacity is also in focus. Unconfirmed reports of a Houthi strike on the East-West Petroline circulated overnight. There is no official confirmation, but any verified damage would be significant given the pipeline is Saudi Arabia’s main crude export route around Hormuz.
  • Prompt structure continues to tighten, highlighting the growing scarcity premium at the front of the curve. Brent M1-M2 is around +$4.91/bbl, up roughly $1.10/bbl since Monday, Dubai Oct/Nov is close to +$7/bbl, up roughly $1.70/bbl, and WTI Oct/Nov is near +$4.20/bbl, up roughly $0.15/bbl.
  • Freight and deliverability are now driving crude flows. AG-China VLCC earnings have risen to around $800k/day, with TD3C jumping to around $173/mt from $137/mt on Monday, while USGC-Asia freight is close to $29.5mn, or almost $15/bbl before war-risk costs. Despite cheap WTI versus Brent, the US-to-Asia arb remains shut, leaving NWE as the more viable outlet.
  • Diesel E/W has rallied sharply in favour of the East as the intensifying AG conflict raises fresh concerns over underlying supply into Asia. The same supply risk also puts a question mark over whether China can sustain the pace of product exports seen in August. SG10/Brent crack for Oct is currently at $84/bbl up around $14/bbl from Monday close. More on diesel E/W in the brief published by James Noel Beswick this morning.
  • Demand signals are softening but remain secondary to supply risk. OPEC cut its 2026 demand growth forecast to 380 kb/d from 580 kb/d, while raising its 2027 forecast to 2.36 mb/d.
  • US inventories also point to tightness, but not aggressive draws. Crude stocks fell by just 391 kb to 424.1mn bbl, versus expectations for a 1.55mn bbl draw, while Cushing declined by 684 kb. SPR stocks fell by around 1.2mn bbl to 285.4mn bbl, the lowest since November 1982.
  • Gulf foreign ministers are expected to meet their Iranian counterpart as Oman pushes for a temporary Hormuz shipping deal. Any progress could ease the front-end premium, but recent experience suggests diplomacy alone is unlikely to shift the market materially without a sustained improvement in shipping flows and security.
