Prompt ICE GO keeps sliding as every diesel arb opens into Europe; the swing is a US export ban, and Q1 2027 is the buy.

Prompt ICE GO cracks and Oct/Nov spreads have kept declining over the past fortnight, further than even Singapore diesel ones (thought all remain historically very elevated), while Q1 2027 spreads and cracks have moved up and are off the charts. The ICE GO crack now sits in contango in the prompt against a steeply backwardated gas oil outright: refiners appear to be pricing that the conditions for diesel in the coming months will be worse than this one, with maintenance, cold weather and the Middle East and Russia hits all converging on Q1.

Record HOGO weakness and near-record GO e/w weakness, both knocked down by US export-ban talk, have opened essentially every US and Asian diesel arb into Europe in the prompt, Houston to Rotterdam around +$30/mt. Hence the trade splits by tenor: short Oct/Nov and Nov/Dec ICE GO while the arbs stay open and Europe is somewhat well supplied, but buy Q1 2027, elevated as it looks, into the lowest end-of-year diesel stocks on record.

The invalidator for the short is a formal US export ban. Trump endorsed one this week, with Bessent studying feasibility and the 3 November midterms sharpening the timing. On any formal announcement we cover the prompt short immediately: a brief spot rally into the ban, TC14 collapsing after (it printed WS 150 on 11 August), the GO e/w blowing out to pull Asian barrels West, and a month-to-six-week window of maximum tightness while the US stops supplying Europe and the eastern armada has yet to arrive. The panic alone would be bullish.

A ban would only harden the medium-term view, because Asia cannot fill the gap. Europe has taken roughly 40% of its diesel from the US in 2026, approximate numbers, replacing US flows leaves Europe well short, even before we consider Latin America’s diesel needs, with too few clean tankers to run the Asia-Europe voyage anyway. The honest counterweight is demand: a Med broker reports premia dropping on weak buying, one Italian major’s sales down 5-10% year on year, and JODI has OECD Americas gasoil demand falling.
