Dangote says ambitious timeline for meda-refinery on track

“Such mega-refineries have been subjected to multi-year delays before, and it would still be a very optimistic timeline.” — June Goh, Senior Oil Analyst at Sparta.

In a recent analysis for Bloomberg, Sparta’s Senior Oil Analyst, June Goh, pushed back on the credibility of Dangote’s plan to double refining capacity to 1.4 million barrels a day within three years. The original 700,000 b/d Lagos refinery took 11 years and $20 billion to build, and Goh notes mega-refinery projects have a track record of multi-year delays even under experienced teams. The stakes are high given the current supply backdrop: the existing refinery posted a $1.8 billion first-half profit as the Iran and Ukraine conflicts squeeze global fuel supply, and the expansion is meant to come online before the first plant’s major maintenance is due in 2030. Traders should watch the construction schedule closely, since any slippage would extend the current tight-refining, high-margin environment rather than ease it.
