“Ample availability in the Atlantic Basin of alkylate – a blending component highly sought for California’s unique blend of CARBOB gasoline – could have also contributed to the uptick in imports from the Bahamas”, Sparta analyst Philip Jones-Lux said.
Reuters, June 9, 2025 – California fuel imports hit a four-year high in May following refinery outages at Chevron, PBF, and Valero. Sparta analyst Philip Jones-Lux noted that increased flows from Asia and the Bahamas reflect growing reliance on imports, especially with major refinery closures ahead. Unusual trade routes and ample alkylate availability helped cushion price spikes, but retail gasoline remains elevated at $4.68/gal.
