A quick primer on Al Zour and its impact

We have all heard the news on the Al Zour fire that affected ARDS 1 and 2, along with the ongoing maintenance on ARDS 3. The actual impact on VLSFO will depend on how long it takes to properly restart the units but I thought I’d do a quick primer on this important refinery that was basically dictating 0.5 dynamics from Nov 2022 until Dangote usurped the throne. 

Al Zour is a relatively simple refinery with 3 x 205kbd CDUs, for a total of 615kbd in nameplate capacity. It’s designed to be able to run at 100% nameplate if run fully on KEC but only some 85-90% if run on mixture of KEC, KHC and the rather heavy Eocene. Looking at recent stats, I’d assume something close to 90-95% on a mixture of mostly KHC and Eocene (could be wrong here).
